A Better Approach from Better Place

March 1st, 2009

Speaking of electric vehicles and the smart grid, it looks like Better Place is way ahead of me.  They have termed the coming interaction between the smart grid and the electric vehicle fleet the “electrical vehicle network” and are aiming to treat electric vehicles like cell phones.  Their goals are ambitious, here’s a sample:

  • an electric vehicle that can go up to 100 miles on a single charge (I guess this isn’t as ambitious as the Tesla roadster, which aims for over 200 miles).
  • plan to deploy a network of charging stations so that the user can simply drive in and have their battery replaced with a fully-charged one in an automated way
  • charge spots will be available in parking lots and garages
There’s not a lot of detail on the web site about how this will happen, but they’ve got some great goals.  If they are able to deploy this charging network quickly, it would go along way to proliferating the use of the electric vehicle and help the development of the smart grid as well.
It pays to catch up on your reading — this was featured on CNBC about a month ago and was recently covered on TNR and Green Inc.
